Sarkozy affronta una crescente pressione

Il presidente francese Nicolas Sarkozy è tornato al lavoro dopo la pausa estiva. Si trova di fronte a una serie di questioni di crescente impegno, comprese critiche interne e dall'estero, la rifroma delle pensioni, i tagli alla spesa e gli scioperi.

La fine di agosto è La Rentree; tradizionalmente il periodo in cui la Francia torna al lavoro. È sempre un'occasione per tristezze post-vacanziere, ma questo è soprattutto vero per questo presidente e particolarmente quest'anno. Nelle passate due settimane la sua leadership è stata messa in dubbio nel Paese e all'estero a proposito del suo controverso piano per l'espulsione di zingari di etnia Rom. Una cinica tattica, dicono gli avversari, per riconquistare il favore del pubblico.

Il problema è che non funziona. I sondaggi sono contro di lui; sezioni del suo stesso partito sono contro di lui; persino la chiesa lo ha abbandonato sulla questione dei ROm. Ed è già cominciato il dibattito sulle possibilità di Sarkozy per il 2012.

Il presidente deve trovare 100 miliardi di euro da tagliare per il 2013, per ridurre al 3% - all'interno dei limiti EU - un deficit di bilancio enormemente inflazionato all'8%. La sfida più grossa sarà la riforma delle pensioni, e il suo piano per innalzare l'età della pensione da 60 a 62 anni, che è profondamente impopolare.

I prossimi due mesi saranno il punto critico principale della presidenza di Sarkozy, che è stato eletto sulla base di un piano per risolvere i problemi dell'economia. Se fallisse, molti pensano che dovrà lottare per riprendersi.

Sarkozy faces increasing pressure

The French President Nicolas Sarkozy has returned to work after the summer break. He faces a series of increasing challenges, including criticism at home and abroad, pension reforms, spending cuts and strikes.

The end of August is La Rentree; traditionally the time when France returns to the office. Always an occasion for post-holiday blues, but especially so for this president and particularly this year.

In the past two weeks his leadership has been questioned at home and abroad over his controversial plan to expel Roma gypsies.

A cynical ploy, said opponents, to win back public favour.

The trouble is it's not working. The polls are against him; sections of his own party are against him; even the church has forsaken him on the issue of the Roma.

And already the debate has begun on Mr Sarkozy's chances for 2012.

The president has to find 100 billion euros of cuts by 2013, to cut a hugely inflated budget deficit from 8 to 3% - within EU limits.

Elected on a plan to fix the economy, this next two months will be the most critical point of Mr Sarkozy's presidency. Get it wrong, and many think he will struggle to recover.
