La Francia sciopera contro la riforma delle pensioni

I lavoratori francesi stanno protestando contro il progetto del presidente Nicolas Sarkozy di aumentare l'età pensionabile da 60 a 62 anni. I lavoratori e i sindacati hanno indetto scioperi a Parigi e in altre grandi città.

Decine di migliaia di manifestanti si sono riversati nelle strade di Parigi e di altre città francesi oggi per manifestare contro l'innalzamento dell'età pensionabile da 60 a 62 anni. Ci sono stati anche notevoli disagi nei trasporti quando i lavoratori sono scesi in sciopero. Alcuni portavano cartelli che dicevano "Rifiutiamo i piani di austerità".

Per il presidente Sarkozy, l'innalzamento dell'età pensionabile è una riforma chiave per il taglio dei costi. I sindacati sostengono che oggi abbiano sfilato due milioni e mezzo di persone. Secondo il governo in numero era più vicino a un milione. Ma sono tutti d'accordo le proteste sono in crescita e si prevedono ulteriori scioperi. Ed entro la fine del mese, il presidente Sarkozy dovrebbe annunciare cinquanta miliardi di dollari di tagli alla spesa.

L'Europa sta affrontando una stagione di scioperi, dato che i governi fortemente indebitati riducono le spese e cercano di limitare servizi che spesso sono apprezzati.

French workers are protesting over President Nicolas Sarkozy's plan to raise the retirement age to 62 from 60. The workers and unions have have called strikes in Paris and other major cities.

Tens of thousands of protestors poured onto the streets of Paris and other French cities today to rally against raising the pension age from 60 to 62.

There was also major disruption to transport as workers went on strike.

For President Sarkozy, raising the retirement age is a key cost-cutting reform. The unions said two and a half million people marched today.

The government said the figure was closer to a million. But everyone agrees the protests are growing and further strikes are expected. And later this month, President Sarkozy is likely to announce fifty billion dollars in spending cuts.

Europe is facing a season of strikes, as heavily-indebted governments reduce costs and try and trim benefits that are often cherished.
