Le riparazioni per la perdita di petrolio iniziano i passi finali

Ingegneri hanno iniziato i passi finali nel tappare il pozzo nel Golfo del Messico che ha causato la peggior perdita accidentale di petrolio al mondo.

L'operazione detta Static Kill è già avanti sulla sua strada e al momento i risultati sembrano promettenti. Il processo richiede che venga pompato fango e cemento nel pozzo al fine di respingere il petrolio sottoterra. È simile alla procedura che è fallita in maggio - ma allora il petrolio fluiva ancora liberamente. Questa volta un tappo è al suo posto e ancora regge dopo due settimane.

Se Static Kill ha successo, il pozzo sarà sigillato con cemento in cima e sotto la superficie, usando i pozzi di appoggio che hanno richiesto molti mesi per essere scavati. Ma anche quando la perdita fosse completamente fermata, gli effetti della perdita di petrolio della BP continueranno probabilmente in modo indefinito.

L'economia locale è stata menomata e alcuni genitori segnalano malattie e problemi comportamentali nei bambini esposti alla perdita e colpiti dallo stress che ha causato. Oil leak repairs start final stages

Engineers have begun the final stages of plugging the well in the Gulf of Mexico that caused the world's worst accidental oil spill.

The operation called Static Kill is well underway and so far the results look promising.

The process involves pumping mud and cement into the well to push the oil back underground. It's similar to the procedure that failed in May - but then the oil was still gushing freely. This time a cap is in place and still holding after two weeks.

If Static Kill is successful, the well will be sealed with concrete on top and below the surface, using the relief wells that have taken several months to drill.

But even when the leak is fully stopped, the effects of the BP oil spill are likely to continue indefinitely.

The local economy has been crippled and some parents are reporting sickness and behaviour problems in children exposed to the spill and affected by the stress it's caused.
