Il controverso allenatore argentino

Tra le 32 squadre che partecipano alla coppa del mondo, l'Argentina potrebbe essere la più interessante da seguire. E questo è dovuto principalmente all'allenatore della squadra, Diego Maradona.

Il circo mediatico che segue Diego Maradona non è mai lontano da una storia succosa. Questo è un uomo le cui mosse sul campo da calcio facevano disperare gli avversari. Ma la sua carriera di giocatore è stata rovinata da squalifiche per uso di droghe e dal notorio goal con la "mano di dio" nei quarti di finale contro l'Inghilterra in una coppa del mondo.

Dopo essersi ritirato, Maradona ha sofferto di dipendenza da droga, salute cagionevole e aumento di peso. È diventato dell'Argentina senza avere praticamente nessuna esperienza manageriale. Nei 19 mesi in cui è stato in carica ha provato più di cento diversi giocatori. Un torneo di qualificazione difficile che ha compreso una sconfitta per 6 a 1 in Bolovia.

Quando l'Argentina ha battuto l'Uruguay e ha finalmente assicurato il suo posto in Sud Africa, Maradona ha fatto partire un torrente di insulti contro i suoi critici in una trasmissione in diretta televisiva. Ha ricevuto un'altra squalifica che ha portato al fatto che non ha potuto assistere alle estrazioni per la coppa del mondo.

Da allora è stato ricoverato in ospedale per essere stato morso in faccia dal suo cane di casa. Mentre stava andando ad annunciare la selezione per la coppa del mondo, la macchina su cui stava andando ha investito un fotografo. Argentina's controversial coach

Of the 32 teams competing at the World Cup Argentina might be the most interesting to follow. That's mainly down to the team's coach, Diego Maradona.

The media circus which follows Diego Maradona is never far from a juicy story.

This is a man whose trickery on the football field devastated opponents.

But his playing career was blighted by doping bans and the infamous 'hand of God' goal against England in a World Cup quarter-final.

• the infamous 'hand of God' goal: a well known incident when Maradona illegally used his hand to score a goal. Maradona said the goal was scored 'a little bit by the hand of God'.

After he retired Maradona suffered from drug addiction, ill health and weight gain. He became coach of Argentina with virtually no managerial experience. In his 19 months in charge he's tried out more than a hundred different players. An arduous qualifying campaign included a 6-1 defeat in Bolivia.

When Argentina beat Uruguay to eventually seal their place in South Africa Maradona let fly a stream of profanities against his critics on live television.

Since then he was admitted to hospital after being bitten in the face by his pet dog. On his way to announce his World Cup squad, the car he was driving ran over a photographer.

And he's promised to run naked through the centre of Buenos Aires if Argentina win the World Cup. It might not happen, but following Argentina shouldn't be boring.
