Questo pomeriggio i tifosi francesi sono affluiti nella zona dedicata a loro, sotto la Tour Eiffel, sperando in un miracolo, temendo proprio da quello che hanno ottenuto. Un'altra brutta performance, un cartellino rosso, una seconda sconfitta da una squadra che è letteralmente franata negli scorsi giorni.
Domenica, sotto gli occhi dei media internazionali, la sessione di allenamento della Francia è scaduta in una farsa, con l'espulsione dell'attaccante Nicolas Anelka caduto in disgrazia. I giocatori hanno lasciato il campo rifiutandosi di allenarsi, in seguito l'allenatore della squadra ha dato le dimissioni, disgustato. Per i tifosi, qui in Francia, è stata una settimana estremamente dolorosa. Alcuni non credono a quello che è successo.
Uomo 1: "Sorpreso, sorpreso, mi vergogno, ho molti diversi sentimenti."
Uomo 2: "Amo lo sport, amo lo spirito dello sport. E io penso che quest'anno l'abbiamo perso. Penso che lo spirito del calcio se ne sia andato via e questo è molto, molto brutto."
L'inchiesta su quel che è successo è già cominciata. La sua origine è, naturalmente, la disarmonia in campo. Alcuni danno la colpa all'allenatore, altri alla rigida direzione della federazione francese, che non capirebbe, dicono i critici, le richieste del gioco professionista.
L'eliminazione dalla coppa del mondo è sempre dolorosa ma mai in precendenza una squadra aveva dovuto affrontare il tipo di recriminazioni a cui questa squadra è ora sottoposta. E un pensiero va al nuovo direttore tecnico francese, Lauren Blanc, che erediterà tutto questo disastro, e deve costruire dal talento che è restato una squadra degno della maglia blu.

France have been eliminated from the World Cup after losing 2-1 to hosts South Africa. But what has shocked French fans even more is the way in which the team self-destructed before the match.
The French fans flooded into the fan zone this afternoon, beneath the Eiffel Tower, hoping for a miracle, dreading exactly what they got. Another dismal performance, a red card, a second defeat for a side that has literally imploded in recent days.

The inquiry into what happened has already begun. The root of it, of course, the disharmony in the camp. Some blame the manager, others the rigid leadership of the French Federation, out of touch, say the critics, with the demands of the professional game.
