G8 e G20 si incontrano in Canada

Due importanti vertici si tengono in Canada nei prossimi giorni. Prima il G8 nel rurale Ontario e poi il G20 delle principali economie nella più grande città del Paese, Toronto.

Il G20 è ora il principale punto di incontro per i temi dell'economia globale. Ma alcuni tra i Paesi del G8, che si incontrano per primi, venerdì e sabato, sono tra quelli con i grandi problemi economici. Hanno deficit di bilancio statale crescente, ma specialmente il presidente Obama è preoccupato che premature misure d'austerity potrebbero ostacolare la ripresa economica che sta arrivando.

Questioni sullo sviluppo sono ai primi posti nell'agenda del G8, e si discuterà della salute delle madri e dei bambini in nazioni con un basso reddito. Attivisti dicono che il G8 ha fallito nel rendere disponibile l'aiuto che era stato promesso nei vertici precedenti.

Il vertice discuterà anche una serie di temi diplomatici che includono la Corea del Nord, il programma nucleare iraniano e il medio oriente.

La sicurezza attorno ai luoghi del vertice è stringente, e ci sono stati alcuni arresti a Toronto. La polizia dice che un uomo è stato trovato vicino al sito del G20 con un arco, una sega circolare e bidoni di carburante nella sua macchina, anche se non ha confermato che avesse alcuna intenzione in relazione al vertice.

Precedentemente nella settimana due altre persone sono state arrestate con l'accusa di detenzione di armi da fuoco e esplosivi. Le proteste organizzate nei confronti del vertice sono comunque state, per ora, pacifiche.

G8 and G20 to meet in Canada

Two major summits are taking place in Canada over the next few days.

First the G8 in rural Ontario and then the G20 major economies in the country's largest city, Toronto.

The G20 is now the main forum for global economic issues.

But some of the G8 countries, who meet first, on Friday and Saturday, are the ones with the big economic problems. They have rising government debts, but President Obama especially is concerned that premature austerity measures might set back the economic recovery that is under way.

• austerity measures: economic policies which are designed to help countries that owe a lot of money by making heavy cuts to government spending

Development issues are high on the G8 agenda and they'll discuss maternal and child health in low income nations.

Campaigners say the G8 have failed to deliver aid promised at previous summits.

This summit will also discuss a range of diplomatic issues including North Korea, Iran's nuclear programme and the Middle East.

Security around the summit venues is tight, and there have been some arrests in Toronto. Police say that a man was found near the G20 site with a crossbow, a chainsaw and fuel containers in his car, though they could not confirm that he had any intentions in relation to the summit.

Earlier in the week two other people were arrested on firearms and explosives charges. Organised protests about the summit however have been peaceful so far.
