Una ballerina 'rivoluzionaria'

Documenti segreti recentemente resi pubblici mostrano che la ballerina inglese Dame Margot Fonteyn è stata pesantemente coinvolta in una congiura per rovesciare il governo panamense nel 1959.

Documenti del ministero degli esteri rivelano che Dame Margot Fonteyn era sospettata di essere coinvolta più pesantemente nel tentativo di colpo di stato di quanto si era precedentemente pensato. La accusano di complicità, di aver saputo che suo marito stava raccogliendo armi e ribelli.

L'ambasciatore inglese a Panama ha condannato il suo comportamento come "altamente reprensibile e irresponsabile". Ha detto che "non era proprio per qualunque cittadino inglese, ma peggio ancora per chi è stato onorato (dal titolo di Dame) dalla regina".

Dopo il suo arresto a Panama e il successivo rilascio, Dame Margot ha volato a Londra dove ha incontrato il ministro degli esteri John Profumo. In una nota che è pure stata appena divulgata, rivela che lei gli aveva detto che aveva incontrato Fidel Castro, che le aveva promesso di aiutare suo marito a rovesciare il governo panamense.

Profumo scrive che si è dovuto pizzicare per essere sicuro che non era in un sogno che descrive come "una storia da opera comica".

After her arrest in Panama and subsequent release, Dame Margot flew to London where she met the Foreign Office Minister John Profumo. In a memo, which has also just been released, he reveals she told him she'd met Fidel Castro, who promised to help her husband overthrow the Panamanian government.
