Carceriere dei khmer rossi si appella contro la sentenza

Un ex capo delle prigioni dei khmer rossi, dichiarato colpevole di crimini contro l'umanità ha fatto ricorso in appello contro la sentenza che lo ha mandato in prigione. Kaing Guek Eav è stato condannato a 35 anni per il suo ruolo nella tortura e nell'omicidio di migliaia di persone in Cambogia.

L'appello del compagno Duch fa il paio con quello annunciato nel corso di questo mese dall'accusa. Sostenevano che la sentenza era troppo leggera dato che, considerando la parte di pena già scontata, Duch potrebbe essere rilasciato in meno di 19 anni.

Questo è duro da accettare per molti superstiti dell'era dei khmer rossi. L'appello di Duch potrebbe aggravare la loro scontentezza. Ha ammesso di aver supervisionato la tortura sistematica e l'omicidio di migliaia di persone nel centro detentivo S-21 e si è perfino scusato con i parenti delle vittime durante il processo.

Ma l'ex capo prigione ora dice che non sarebbe nemmeno dovuto essere stato processato. Il tribunale era stato creato per perseguire i capi di più alto grado dei khmer rossi ancora in vita e i maggiori responsabili per le peggiori atrocità. Duch afferma di non cadere in nessuna delle due categorie. Gli appelli potrebbero essere valutati a partire dalla fine di novembre.

A former Khmer Rouge prison chief found guilty of crimes against humanity is appealing his prison sentence. Kaing Guek Eav was jailed for 35 years for his role in the torture and murder of thousands of people in Cambodia.

Comrade Duch's appeal mirrors one announced by the prosecutors earlier this month.

• comrade: member of a communist political party
• mirrors: reflects or is similar to
• prosecutors: lawyers who try to prove in a trial that the person charged with a crime is guilty

They said the sentence passed was too lenient as, with time already served, Duch could be free in at most 19 years.

• lenient: not as strict as expected
• time already served: time already spent in prison

That's hard for many survivors of the Khmer Rouge era to swallow.

Duch's appeal may add to their unease. He admitted overseeing the systematic torture and murder of thousands of people at the S-21 detention centre and even apologised to the victims' relatives in court.

But the former prison chief now says he shouldn't have been on trial at all. The tribunal was set up to prosecute the surviving senior leaders of the Khmer Rouge and those most responsible for the worst atrocities.

• Duch claims he falls into neither category. The appeals may be heard as early as the end of November.
